Description
Overview
The Raspberry Pi 5 is the latest flagship “single board computer” (SBC) from the Raspberry Pi Foundation. It brings significant upgrades over the Pi 4 generation, especially in performance, I/O abilities, and expand ability.
The 8 GB variant uses the same board and features as other Pi 5 models (2 GB, 4 GB, 16 GB), differing only in the memory capacity.
Key Features & Highlights
Performance boost: The Pi 5 delivers ~2–3× higher CPU performance over Raspberry Pi 4, thanks to architectural improvements and higher clock speed. Raspberry Pi+1
Enhanced I/O & bandwidth: The RP1 “south-bridge” I/O controller improves USB, SD card, and peripheral data throughput. Raspberry Pi Datasheets+2Raspberry Pi+2
Expanded storage options: The PCIe x1 interface allows addition of fast storage (e.g. NVMe SSDs) through adapters / Hats. Raspberry Pi Datasheets+2Raspberry Pi+2
Improved camera & display bandwidth: The new MIPI lanes (4-lane) offer higher throughput for dual cameras / displays. Raspberry Pi Datasheets+2Raspberry Pi+2
Dual 4K displays: Support for two simultaneous 4K displays at 60 Hz. Raspberry Pi+2Raspberry Pi Datasheets+2
Real-time clock (RTC): On-board RTC (requires external battery) for timekeeping when powered off. Raspberry Pi Datasheets+1
Power button support: The board supports a power button input for better system control. Raspberry Pi Datasheets+1
Future-proof & long lifecycle: With production guaranteed until at least 2036, your project has long-term viability. Raspberry Pi Datasheets+1
Considerations & Best Practices
Cooling / thermal management: Because of the higher performance, active cooling (fans or heat sinks) is strongly recommended when the board is under load. Raspberry Pi+2CanaKit+2
Power supply quality: Use a stable 5 V/5 A USB-C supply. Lower-current supplies or poor quality cables may lead to under voltage and instability. Raspberry Pi Datasheets+2Raspberry Pi+2
Compatibility: Some accessories (cases, cables) from Pi 4 will not fit Pi 5; new designs and compatible Hats are required. Raspberry Pi+2CanaKit+2
Software support: Use the latest Raspberry Pi OS (Bookworm or newer); older versions may not work properly on Pi 5. Raspberry Pi+1
Peripheral power draw: If you attach many USB devices, SSDs, or Hats, monitor total power draw so the board does not starve.
Storage & boot options: Booting from micro-SD is default; booting from PCIe/NVMe is possible via adapters, but setup is more advanced.
